Reproductive cycle

Mated female paper wasps survive the winter, while males and unfertilized females perish. In the spring, potential queens compete for control of the nest by attempting to lay more eggs than their rivals. After a brief period of competition, one queen will dominate the nest, and the subordinate females will cease attempting to lay eggs. New males and females will then emerge, mate, and complete the life cycle.

Habitat

Paper wasps build inverted, umbrella-like nests with exposed cells, that are typically located under eaves or in the sheltered areas of old buildings.

Diet

These wasps primarily feed on insect larvae and rotting fruit, making them more of a nuisance in orchards or near fruit trees.
