Reproductive cycle

Under normal conditions, mature bed bugs can live anywhere from four months to over a year. After mating and consuming a blood meal, the female bed bug lays between 10 to 50 eggs in irregular masses, with a total of up to 200 eggs. In some cases, a single female may lay as many as 500 eggs. During warm periods, hatching occurs within 6 to 10 days. Under favorable conditions, the time from egg hatching to egg laying can take up to 2 months. Typically, there are 3 to 4 generations of bed bugs per year.

Habitat

Bed bugs infest the sleeping quarters of humans and other animals. They can be troublesome in homes, hotels, theaters, barns, poultry houses, and buildings housing rabbits or other warm-blooded animals and birds.

Diet

Bed bugs primarily feed at night by biting sleeping people or animals. However, if they are very hungry and the light is dim, they may feed during the day as well.

Ability

When bed bugs bite, they inject an anticoagulant into the skin. This substance often causes irritation and inflammation, leading to the development of welts and intense itching.
